There is a number that every Indian earning above ₹15 lakh should know: $250,000. That is the annual LRS limit. At ₹93 per dollar, that is approximately ₹2.3 crore. Per person. Per year. Resetting every April 1. A married couple can move $500,000. And the vast majority of Indians have never used a single dollar of it.

Why People Don't Use LRS (And Why They Should)

BARRIERTCS feels like a penalty
REALITYTCS is an advance tax payment, fully adjustable against income tax. Net cost: ₹0. You get every rupee back.
BARRIERThe process seems complicated
REALITYOpen account (1-3 days), remit via bank (1-3 days), buy. Total time: under a week. Simpler than getting a credit card.
BARRIERI don't know enough about global markets
REALITYYou don't need to. An S&P 500 ETF (VOO) gives you 500 companies for 0.03% cost. One purchase. Done.
BARRIERMy CA says don't invest abroad
REALITYMost CAs are unfamiliar with Schedule FA and Form 67. This is a knowledge gap, not a legal barrier. LRS is fully legal and RBI-sanctioned.
BARRIERI'll wait for a better exchange rate
REALITYThe rupee has depreciated in 28 of the last 32 years. Waiting for a better rate is waiting for a sale that never comes.

"A couple earning ₹50 lakh combined can legally move $500,000 abroad every year. Over a decade of investing, that is a global portfolio that would make most private banking clients jealous."

FREQUENTLY ASKED

LRS Opportunity Questions

Can I really invest $250,000 per year?
Yes. LRS permits $250,000 per individual per financial year. No special approval needed. Any Indian resident with PAN and bank account. The limit resets every April 1.
What if I can only invest $500 per month?
That is a perfectly valid start. $500/month for 10 years at 10% annualised (S&P 500 historical average in USD) compounds to approximately $95,600. Add rupee depreciation tailwind and the INR value is significantly higher.
Should I invest a lump sum or systematically?
Systematic investing (monthly or quarterly) removes timing anxiety and averages your entry price. Start with a test remittance ($500-$1,000), then build a rhythm.
What about the ₹10 lakh TCS threshold?
Your first ₹10 lakh of LRS remittances per financial year is TCS-free. Above that, 20% TCS applies but is fully adjustable against income tax. If you stay below ₹10L, zero TCS friction.
Your $250,000 right. Use it.
